AIDS remains a leading cause of death for women. In some areas in the world, HIV disproportionately affects women and girls who are uniquely vulnerable because of social, cultural and economic factors related to gender norms. At the same time, HIV stigma and discrimination – which disproportionately affects women and girls in some societies – undermines prevention, treatment and care efforts worldwide.
