JOBS AT ICRW

Economist 

The Economist will work on ICRW’s evaluation activities examining the links between women’s economic activities and empowerment. Initially, the primary focus of work is on a World Bank program on Results Based Initiatives aimed at increasing women’s empowerment and earning capacity through training, improved market access, and other interventions.  Through this project, ICRW is designing and implementing rigorous evaluations of 5 RBI projects in 6 countries.  The candidate is expected to be the lead on at least one evaluation, providing overall design, liaison with partners and in-country counterparts, overseeing data collection, conducting analysis of quantitative data, and reporting.  The candidate will also provide the RBI project with technical support and to contribute to cross-project reports and related research. 

Beyond the RBI project, the candidate will work on developing new evaluation projects on the links between women’s empowerment and microfinance/micro-enterprise/agriculture. In addition to monitoring and evaluation of women’s economic empowerment, the team currently has projects in asset building and property rights, and is working to develop a portfolio in microfinance and micro-and small enterprise.

Primary Duties:

Initially, as a team member of the RBI project:

  • Initially, organizes high-quality data collection, management and analysis for evaluations of interventions to improve women’s economic empowerment.
  • Liaison and collaboration with key counterparts in the World Bank and UNIFEM and with local counterparts.
  • Develops research methodology for evaluations and conducts quantitative analysis.
  • Writes and disseminates research results in a number of formats, including donor reports, institutional publications, journal articles, and conference presentations.
  • Provides technical assistant to ICRW staff and counterparts as needed.

For other work in the Economic Development Team:

  • Works simultaneously on a variety of projects, manages projects, and provides technical assistance to partners and research. 
  • Identifies collaborations with partners in and works to maintain such working relationships
  • Compiles, analyzes, and disseminates a variety of economic information, including statistical data that can answer analytical and strategic questions on various development issues.
  • Undertakes research projects ranging from short-term data collection to long-term projects involving extensive analysis.
  • Represents ICRW at selected external meetings.
  • Responsible for project budgeting and reporting.

Required Education, Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • PhD in Economics or Agricultural Economics
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in evaluation, research, program, and/or policy experience in gender and development as it relates to micro- and small- enterprise development, microfinance and rural development.
  • Strong quantitative analysis skills to include a sound base in econometrics and proficiency in STATA, SAS, or SPSS.
  • Experience in analysis of large datasets, preferable from a development context.
  • Field experience organizing and supervising large survey data collection is a strong plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for both technical and lay audiences required; to include proposal development and writing skills; strong presentation skills essential.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with professionals at different levels, including colleagues, partners, and donor organizations.
  • Experience living and working in a developing country and fluency or reading proficiency in Spanish, French, or other foreign languages a plus.
  • Must be a team player committed to building an innovative portfolio of research and program work that addresses gender and economic and social development issues.
