In September 2016, the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) and Re:Gender (formerly the National Council for Research on Women) announced they were merging. Their common mission of gender equality would henceforth be pursued under the banner of the International Center for Research on Women.
Over the past two decades, ICRW and Re:Gender have enjoyed a close partnership and shared a commitment to ending gender inequality in the U.S. and globally. Both organizations valued the power of research in crafting policy and designing services that not only serve the needs of women and girls but strive to transform their social status and economic well-being. ICRW and Re:Gender are venerable research organizations that have been engaged for decades in advocating for women’s rights and human rights.
While challenges to women’s empowerment and gender equality manifest differently across the world, expressions of exclusion and inequality share common underlying causes at their core. For this reason, a merger between a domestic-facing and an internationally-facing organization made sense conceptually, programmatically and fiscally.
In reflecting on global realities, Re:Gender decided to propose a merger with ICRW as a way to elevate its mission, rise to the challenge of a globalizing world and secure its legacy. ICRW agreed that not only would a merger serve the missions and mandates of both organizations, more importantly it would create powerful cross-sector and cross-regional synergies to drive our shared agenda forward.
On Friday, September 16, 2016, Re:Gender closed its offices. Re:Gender staff are moving on to exciting new opportunities. We thank them for their dedication to the organization and for their steadfast activism on securing a gender-equal world. ICRW will soon welcome two members of the Re:Gender Board of Directors to its Board. The Re:Gender website remained open until mid-November, when it was melded with the newly rebranded ICRW website. In the coming months, we will conduct a listening tour, meeting with Re:Gender’s supporters and partners, to get ideas on how to leverage this new global platform. Through these special communications, you can expect to hear more from us as the merged organization evolves. Should you need to get in touch, kindly contact ICRW Chief of Staff, Julia Drost, at [email protected].
