The perfect present: gift giving and gender norms
The Re:Gender Primer provides a quick look at the history of gifting highlights how many cultural, religious and social celebrations continue to reinforce gender and social norms that began hundreds of years ago. While not exhaustive, this short primer looks at some of the effects of gendered gifting — that is, gifting based on the idea that there are gifts right for “girls” and “boys” — has on children’s understanding of gender and gender roles from infancy all the way into adulthood.
