Lois Romano (she/her) is a long-time national political writer for The Washington Post, Politico, and The Daily Beast. She is currently writing a biography of Mary Todd Lincoln- “An Inconvenient Widow: The Trial and Torment of Mary Todd Lincoln” –to be published by Simon & Schuster in 2022.
Lois Romano started her Post career in the paper’s Style section writing political profiles. During her tenure at The Post, she covered campaigns, started the Post’s Reliable Source Column, was a regional correspondent, and covered higher education. She was part of the team covering the scandals that led to the impeachment of President Clinton and spent more time than she’d like to remember driving the rural roads of Arkansas looking for Paula Jones.
She co-wrote a seven-part biographical series on then-Texas Gov. Bush as he launched his presidential bid. Later, she covered then Sen. John Kerry’s presidential race and Hillary Clinton’s historic race in 2008. Most recently, she was the editor of Washington Post Live, the paper’s live event platform. In 2017, she was. a senior advisor at the Institute of Politics at Harvard. She has a master’s degree in International Affairs from George Washington University. Ms. Romano is married to Sven Erik Holmes, a former federal judge and vice chairman of KPMG, LLP.
